James Beck, a professor of art history at Columbia University, has died of cancer at the age of 77, last May 26.
Mr. Beck became well known as critic of conservation treatments since the restoration of the frescos of the Sistine Chapel back in 1980. He was the president and founder (together with Michael Daley) of ArtWatch International, a nonprofit organization for the protection of works of art and monuments from conservation and restoration treatments.
Among his many books, the
most know is probably "Art Restoration:
"The Culture, the Business and
the Scandal" where he and Daley develop their criticism.
