Cutty Sark, October 2003
Last Monday, May 21, the world famous “Cutty Sark” was damaged
by fire. The fire started apparently around 4.45am
and it was only extinguished by 6.30am.
The 138-year-old tea clipper, one of London's
greatest tourist attractions, was under a £25 million (almost €37 million) restoration,
in a dry dock at Greenwhich (south-east London).
Despite the suspicions that the fire may have been arson the investigations proved to be inconclusive.
Fortunately, due to the restoration works, a significant
part of the vessel had been removed and so the damage inflicted by fire was
confined to the ship's hull and its timber decking.
