During the last month e-conservation has been working on upgrading the website and we are pleased to announce that the html version of the magazine is finally online. We have implemented some new features such as the article image gallery, the directory of authors and we have updated the download section for individual articles as well.

Conservation Theories and Methods
from the mid-20th century to the Present

The course focuses on the history of restoration as explained through the different restoration theories and their practical application in Italy and elsewhere since the late 1940s. The course also deals with color theory in order to better understand the practical application of retouch methods that will be introduced in great detail. Commentaries regarding the most important international charters on conservation and restoration will help in questioning the present view of restoration and to do justice to these texts in daily practice.

The Examination of Transparent Coatings on Furniture

and Wooden Objects

This course emphasizes a practical approach to coatings examination, from overall inspection techniques to spot analysis: it covers observation with visible and ultraviolet light, solubility tests, examination of cross-sections, microchemical tests as well as histochemical staining methods. Useful tips are provided for the use of specific equipment and facilities.  Health and safety issues are also addressed.

Globe Conservation

This course gives an important contribution to the field of globe conservation, because isolated articles in various journals have so far been the only competent publications. It gives a description of the cultural and historical background of the topic. There are shown typical damages on the globes with a case-by-case explanation and it further deals with specific suggestions for conservators concerning concrete practical and preventive conservation.

Microbic Infestation of Objects of Art and Cultural Heritage

The focal point of this course is presenting different methods of detecting and analyzing microorganisms encountered in objects of cultural heritage. The user is introduced to simple analyzing techniques as well as modern and specific approaches. The different ways of removing samples and of nondestructive testing are described explaining which results obtained using these techniques are of significance for the conservator.
